Abstract

Having lived in different environments of civilization than their preceding ancestors, Turks have been seriously interested in translation since the 8th century. Therefore, one of the main problems of Turkish lexicography was to concentrate on bilingual dictionaries until the 19th century. Turkish dictionaries prepared in the early 20th century also could not escape the tradition of bilingual lexicography. This is one of the causes of the great dilemmas that Turkish dictionary writers of today face. The insufficiency of academic studies done on lexicography in Turkey has led to taking the principles of scientific and international value for granted. In this article, methodical errors that arise from the fact that these principles are not applied on the Turkish Dictionary (TDK, 2005) have been studied and exemplified. Having not been able to utilize the vocabulary competently and focusing continually on the quantity of the articles in the dictionary, dictionary writers have prevented the focus on the issue of method and thus the Turkish Dictionary has lost its functionality due to many evaluation and exemplification errors in it. However, descriptive, explanatory, affirmative, suggestive, exemplificative aspects should be in the foreground in a dictionary. The failure to clarify the purpose of the dictionary preparation and the target audience is also an important factor.
