Abstract

Sociology startted being studied intensely in our country short after its emergence as a science in Europe. Country’s problems began to be addressed and some solutions were offered with the concepts, theory and methods of western sociology. This quick contact and close monitoring of western sociology are certainly related with the political/social conditions of the country. The gap between political/social conditions and opportunities has brought some distinctive qualities to Turkish sociology. Knowledge about this spesific and different features in terms of their birth will help us to understand the course of Turkish sociology a history of and the connection of sociology and politics. In this study common characteristics of sociological studies just before and mostly after II. Mesrutiyet period will be identified and explained with examples in the light of both their assumptions and approaches. In this contex, the characteristic features of Turkish sociology –its savior and founder mission, positivist character, transference tradition, politics-centeredness, elitist attitude, Its proximity to the populist ideas, break from its historical ideological bond etc.– will be analyzed.
