Abstract
In October 2008 a new book of funeral services was published by the Archdiocese of Vienna: Manuale für die Begräbnisfeier (Vienna: Wiener-Dom-Verlag, 2008). Developments within Austrian society made it necessary to revise the funeral liturgy and to offer a greater variety of material. The result is a new liturgical book whose theology is based on 1 John 4.7: ‘God is Love’. The following article describes its genesis, points towards the political issues involved and examines its theology.
