Abstract

Tritrichomonas foetus is an importante pathogen that causes chronic diarrhea of the large intestine in cats. Until the completion of this study there were no reports of this disease in Brazil employing molecular biology (PCR) as a diagnostic technique. The most importante clinical signs of infection are skinny stools with mucus, hematochezia, tenesmos and increased frequency of the act of defecation. These are characteristic symptoms of diarrhea of the large intestine. This paper aims to report the detection by real-time PCR (qPCR) of DNA of the protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus em feces of cats with a history of chronic diarrhea, which were seen at the Feline Medicine’s Small Animal Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro.
