Abstract

The electron-deficient cluster ( μ 2-H(Ru 3(CO) 9[ μ 3-NS(O)MePh] ( 1) reacts with the terminal alkyne PhCH 2CCH to give the vinyl complex Ru 3( μ 2-CO) 2(CO) 6[ μ 3-NS(O)MePh]( μ 2- η 1, η 2-PhCH 2 C CH 2)( 2). The analogous reaction with internal alkynes (RCCR′) affords the clusters Ru 3( μ 2-CO)(CO) 7[ μ 3-NS(O)MePh]( μ 3- η 1, η 2-RCCHR′) ( 3 R = R′ = Pr n; 4: R = Ph: R′= Bu n) in which the vinyl ligand has opened a RuRu bond upon coordination the Ru 3 framework. In the case of diphenylacetylene, reaction with two equivalents of the alkyne, yields the vinyl-alkyne cluster ( μ 2-H)Ru 3(CO) 6( μ 2- η 1, η 2-PhC  CHPh)( μ 3- η 1, η 2-PhC CPh)[ μ 3- η 1, η 2-NS(O)Me(C 6H 4)] ( 5) with ortho-metallation of the phenyl substituent of the sulfoximido cap.
