Abstract

We report the first well resolved rare gas mass spectrum showing singly, doubly and triply charged cluster ions. The critical size deduced for triply charged argon ions is Ar 3+ 226. This result is compared with theoretical predictions. We have also studied the threshold electron energy dependence of doubly and triply charged cluster ions giving insight into the electron ionization mechanism. A comparison between mass spectra of Ar n + and Ar n 2+ (with 100 ⩽ n ⩽ 160) gives new evidence that magic numbers are only due to the intrinsic stability of the respective ion.
