Abstract

Triplet-state energy transfer from a suitable sensitizer specifically to thymine in the DNA of intact bacteriophage T4 leads, by the production of thymine dimers, to phage inactivation. Chromatographic analysis of radioactive DNA from sensitized phage demonstrates that thymine dimers are produced, with very low yields of other photoproducts.
