Triorchidism: Unilateral double atrophic undescended testis in Tertiary Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia

Abstract

Polyorchidism is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of more than two intra- or extra-scrotal testicles. There are more than 200 cases reported in the medical literature so far (Balasar et al., 2017; Bergholz and Wenke, 2009; Falah, 2019) [1-3]. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case report in pediatrics age group from Africa. A 4-year-old male child diagnosed with undescended left testis that undergone orchidopexy two years back came to our clinic with recurrent undescended testis. The patient had undergone second surgery with the previous inguinal incision which revealed incidentally left side two atrophic testis with distinct epididymis and vas deferens which was missed during the initial surgery. This is Type IV polyorchidism rarest of all types according to Leung classification. Polyorchidism is a rare genitourinary abnormality and is generally found incidentally during imaging or surgical evaluation of conditions such as inguinal hernia, undescended testis and testicular torsion.
