Abstract

This paper presents the findings of the 1990 follow-up analysis of data from the 1987 Trinidad and Tobago Demographic Health Survey. The analysis focused on data regarding contraceptive use discontinuation of use and trends in use among the survey respondents. Overall it is indicated that the pill is the most popular method of contraception among women. Despite its popularity however only about one-fourth of the users are practicing the method. The next most popular method is the condom used by more than one-fifth of contraceptive users. For those users aged 35-49 female sterilization is noted as the most popular method (16%). Other contraceptive methods used include IUD periodic abstinence withdrawal and vaginal approaches. Hormonal injectables are not popular among the women in the two districts and the vast majority of those who have tried them discontinued their use of the method. Primary reasons for discontinuation of use include the desire to become pregnant and health concerns.
