Abstract
I derive some satisfaction from the fact that the general judgment of astrometric work with reflectors as being inferior to that carried out with the long focus refractors, which existed for most of this century, is no longer generally accepted, and that the USNO 61-inch astrometric reflector has contributed to this. If, however, van Maanen had continued his parallax work with the 60-inch Mt. Wilson reflector, or stayed within the small coma free field of the 100-inch telescope, his contributions to the parallax field would have been more justly appreciated.
