Abstract

In DyPO4 the transition from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic state as a function of temperature and magnetic field was studied using linear magnetic birefringence (LMB). Below the tricritical point Tt=(2.00+or-0.05)K the LMB discontinuity was measured along the first-order line. Above Tt the LMB is described by a power law and, because of the proportionality between LMB and magnetic energy, the critical exponents alpha of the specific heat were obtained. For T<TN the authors find alpha '=0.12+or-0.04 next to the phase boundary with the width of the region where this power law is valid decreasing as one approaches Tt.
