Abstract

SUMMARY A study was made of the subterranean plant parts of 13 species growing in the sand dune area near Santa Ana Pueblo, New MXfexico. Counts an(l measurements were made on the root systems of 82 plants. Eight species developed tap root systems and 5 were fibrous rooted. Two of the plants xsith long tap roots also developed nuinerotvs roots in the tipper soil levels. MVost of the l)lants had their roots confined to the soft sand layers although a few grew deep enough to penetrate the hardpan caliche stratum. Most of the l)lants in this study had coml)ara
