Abstract

A clinical description is given of a severe outbreak of ringworm among 69 adult domestic donkeys. Direct examination of skin scrapings revealed large numbers of branched arthrosporic hyphae in the skin scales and endo-ectothrix hair invasion. The causative agent was isolated and identified as Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In skin sections there were marked degenerative changes; fungal hyphae and spores were seen in the superficial skin layers and in the majority of hair follicles.
