Abstract

Twenty-three people were involved in an outbreak of trichinosis due to ingestion of bear meat. Of 18 persons who ate uncooked meat, 12 developed fever, myalgia, periorbital edema, and eosinophilia. All had positive skin-tests, and ten had positive bentonite-flocculation-tests (BFTs). Of the 11 asymptomatic patients, including all five who had eaten only cooked meat, six had tests negative to both, and five had positive skin tests or BFTs or both.
