Abstract

The performance and uses of hard coatings to provide resistance to static adhesion, fretting, galling, and wear in nuclear reactor environments in the United Kingdom are discussed, and examples are given of the coatings selected for such applications in high-temperature carbon dioxide and liquid sodium. In particular, the successful use in liquid sodium of coatings based upon a pack aluminizing process is highlighted, and developments in coatings to allow local application of nickel aluminide are mentioned. In carbon dioxide environments, experiences with tungsten carbide and chromium carbide detonation gun coatings are reviewed and illustrated with actual components.
