Abstract

W-C-Co films were deposited on polished high-speed steel substrates by radio frequency (r.f.) magnetron sputtering with different substrate r.f. bias ( V s). The variation of V s causes a compositional variation, particularly in the cobalt content. Tribological tests carried out on films with different cobalt content have shown the effective role of this element on the wear behaviour. For a particular critical value of cobalt, W-C-Co coatings seem to be suitable for coating dies.
