Abstract

This study presents the corrosion and tribocorrosion behavior of three Ti-24Nb based alloys with additions of different percentages of Zr and Sn (Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn, Ti-24Nb-5Zr-7Sn and Ti-24Nb-6Zr-6Sn) in SBF. The Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn alloy exhibits the best corrosion resistance, according to the polarization resistance (Rp) and corrosion rate (Cr) values. In addition, this alloy presented the best tribocorrosion behavior, showing the lower OCP drops during rubbing, achieving a complete recovery after this stage. Lower contents of Sn decreased the corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of these alloys, whereas microhardness of the alloys increased with the Zr content. The lowest CoF and wear rate values were presented by the Ti-24Nb-6Zr-6Sn alloy in tribocorrosion tests. SEM images showed abrasion as the main wear mechanism occurred during tribocorrosion.
