Abstract

In this study, we examined the wear-corrosion rate of AISI-4715 pipe sections using a three-probe electrochemical controlled reciprocating tribometer. The impact of additive chemistry on the friction coefficient, as well as their associated impact on the wear rate was determined. A significant increase in the wear rate (10-times) was observed in hydraulic fracturing fluid with high total disolved solids (HTDS) compared with distilled water. Due to the boundary lubricant nature, mixing of two different organic corrosion inhibitors with HTDS water showed a significant decrease in the friction and wear response (2–3 fold). Finally, the addition of corrosion inhibitor also impacted synergistically to improve the wear-corrosion resistance. Corrosion mitigating efficacy of different inhibitor combinations were correlated well with theoretical corrosion kinetics.
