Abstract

Orthogonally cut specimens of Penrhyn slate from North Wales are subjected to ultrasonic P and S waves in the laboratory. It is shown that the principal axes of wave velocity and dynamic elasticity are concordant with the axes of the original principal tectonic stresses as determined from an earlier analysis of fabric symmetry. The triaxial velocity anisotropy is interpreted in terms of clay mineral orientation in the slate.
