Abstract

Magnesia—alumina spinel (MgO · Al 2O 3) coated on 316SS substrate with a buffer layer of 410SS by the plasma spraying method was examined in hardness and thermal shock resistivity to investigate the optimum conditions for preparation. Among the conditions investigated, the specimen with a 50 μm thick MgO · Al 2O 3 coating by the atmospheric spraying method and a 150 μm thick 410SS undercoating by the vacuum spraying method using particles of 10–45 μm was the best in thermal shock resistivity. This result was consistent with the metallographical observations.
