Abstract

We report here the first observation of triacontahedral growth morphology in a Zn-Mg-Y face-centred icosahedral alloy. Some considerations on the local order in this phase are given by a structural study of several crystalline phases in the binary Zn-Mg, Zn-Y and Mg-Y systems. Our experimental work shows that the icosahedral phase can coexist with both Mackay-type and Bergman-type (or Frank-Kasper-type) crystalline approximant phases of the Zn-Mg phase diagram. However, the occurrence of triacontahedral growth morphology allows us to classify it among the Bergman-type icosahedral alloys.
