Abstract

This article traces the development of the restricted trade practices of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), and explores whether or not there are parallels between the package holiday industry and the grocery industry following the abolition of resale price maintenance in the retail business in 1965. It is concluded that, while superficially parallels are present, in practice the position of the holiday trade in 1988 is very much more complex than that of retailing in 1965. None the less, the emergence of multiples and conglomerate interests is already occurring and will continue.
