Abstract

The article is devoted to consideration of development features of realism trends in pictorial heritage of such artists of the southern region as Mykhailo Bozhyi, Anatolii Zavhorodniy and Kostiantyn Moskovchenko. Analysis of the literature and sources showed that the subject of realism was partially considered by the artists of Soviet Ukraine, but mostly in the context of the general cultural and artistic process of those times, without a detailed study of the differences in the southern region (with the exception of Odessa art). In her research, the author relies on the works of P. Govdi, A. Golubets, M. Kryvolapov, B. Lobanovsky, V. Maliyna, A. Nosenko, A. Petrova, O. Rogochenok, G.Skliarenko, L. Smirna, V. Chupryna and others. The methodology of the research is based on comparative analysis, genre and thematic analysis, which allows to identify characteristic realistic traditions in the painting of the artists. Based on the analysis of works by M. Bozhyi (“The Nurse” 1956, “The Girl in the White Coat” 1961; “Portrait of S. M. Bozhyi”, 1970; and others), A.Zavgorodnyi ("Rybakovka", 1956; “Pier in Gurzuf” 1967; “Bulker Boris Butoma”, 1976 and others), K. Moskovchenko (“Lilac” 1960; “Portrait of the Writer Ivan Plakhtin”, 1970; “Red Cabbage”, 1982 and others), and a number of other works) the publication substantiates that certain features of these artists’ works (truthfulness and reliability of the depicted facts; expressiveness of artistic images; rather restrained colour scale; first of all, the use of complex composition; lyrical representation and world perception, the appeal to simple and understandable scenes of everyday life) link them to the painting traditions of realist artists of the late 19th – early 20th century. However, in addition, each of them introduced a certain innovation in the form of their own artistic vision and manner of painting works. The research undertaken does not exhaust all the aspects of the development of realist trends in the South of Ukraine in 1960-1980s and opens up prospects for further study of the subject in the works of other masters.
