Abstract

The question of the form of rent in the 17th century, the period when the Russia-wide market took shape, is of much significance for an understanding of a number of aspects of the history of the peasantry of that period. It seems to us that, given the present state of knowledge of the question, it is not yet possible to settle the problem of which form of rent was predominant — corvee labor or monetary — and all we can do is to study the tendencies in the development of the various estates or groups of estates.
