Abstract
Increasing public concern over global, national and local environmental management issues has produced a strong and growing contingent of green voters, green consumers and green investors. There is a growing public demand for active involvement in development decisions, and for individual personnel in industry and regulatory bodies to be held publicly accountable for their decisions and the consequences of their actions. There is also a trend towards direct action by community groups who feel that they have been unjustly overridden by development interests. This has happened recently in Japan, the USA, Canada and Australia, for example.
