Abstract

Abstract The trends in research in dental materials science during the period 1907–1972 have been analysed. There has been an increase in research since 1974, particularly in the past few years. At the present time approximately one-quarter of all dental research published in on materials. There has been a fall in research based on patents. While the quantity of research in inorganic materials has declined and that on metallic materials has remained constant, there is increasing interest in polymers. The need for thorough testing and careful clinical evaluation of new materials is stressed, and the direction of future research outlined.
