Abstract

Trends in mortality from various causes in men and women in Northern Ireland have been analysed based on official statistics for 1950–80. In men aged 25–64 years the death rates from all causes and from ischaemic heart disease have significantly increased while the death rate from cerebrovascular disease has significantly decreased. Women of this age group experienced falls in death rates from all causes and cerebrovascular disease and a small non-significant increase in mortality from ischaemic heart disease. There has been a large decline in death rates from hypertension in both men and women.
