Abstract
In order to monitor and improve the quality of health care and to protect patients, we need good reliable evidence of what is actually happening on the wards and elsewhere in practice. Policy needs to be based on actualities, as far as we can ascertain them. The more detailed the evidence we collect about the quality of health care, the better. This will allow for a much more informed and accurate information baseline on which to ground policies and practice and, ultimately, to protect patients. The QualityWatch Focus on hip fracture report (Smith et al, 2013) fits well into this profile. It is a valuable report examining trends in emergency admissions for fractured neck of femur from 2001 to 2011.
