Abstract

Functions of Land Grant universities historically have been teaching, research, and extension. In the early days of the Land Grant movement, major emphasis was on teaching practical application of already known scientific principles to students in classrooms and to farmers and processors to aid them in providing more and better quality food and fiber for consumers. As time passed, the Land Grant concept expanded to its fullest. Both basic and applied research were conducted and results taught to agriculture students on the campuses and relayed to producers and processors through extension education programs.
