Abstract

The Marathas themselves regarded the Treaty of 1779 as valid and binding upon them, and gave effect to its provisions. The treaty is frequently referred to as such in subsequent formal Maratha documents, including the two sanads [decrees] of 1783 and 1785, which purport to have been issued in pursuance of the Treaty. The Marathas did not at any time cast any doubt upon the validity or binding character of the Treaty. (IGJ 1960: 37)
