Abstract

Chronic heart failure is a progressive disease with persistent symptoms that limit day-to-day activities. Fluid retention and congestion contribute to the debilitating symptoms experienced by heart failure patients, impacting on their quality of life. Assessment and management of fluid intake and output are key nursing issues, and this article discusses the importance of fluid balance interventions that can aid symptom control, thus enhancing patient comfort. The underlying physiology of fluid balance in chronic congestive heart failure patients will be explored, as will the psychological factors that may enhance or impede treatment.
