Abstract
During the past decade the problem of treatment-resistant syphilis has received considerable attention in the German and French literature. One gains the impression that resistance to treatment, at least in these countries, is observed with increasing frequency. American reports, however, are few and have dealt with single or at the most a small number of cases. By far the largest series is that of Moore and Robinson, 1 who found 12 cases among the admissions to a large syphilis clinic during fifteen years. They concluded that treatment resistance was not increasing in frequency and was still a rare occurrence in this country. During the past six years, however, we have encountered 18 instances of treatment resistance in patients with early syphilis.
