Abstract

Materials/Methods: Between 1998 and 2001 we treated 118 patients (63 male, 55 female) with cerebral AVM with linac-based radiosurgery (RS) at our institution. Mean age at treatment was 39.8 years (range, 9–72 years). AVM classification according Spetzler was 15 patients grade I (12%), 36 grade II (31%), 35 grade III (30%), 11 grade IV (9%) and 21 grade VI (18%). Three-dimensional conformal treatment planning was based on CT and MRI angiography as well as angiography. Beam shaping was done with a micro-multi-leaf collimator. Median single dose was 18 Gy (range, 14–22 Gy) and median treatment volume was 3.2 cc (range, 0.1–24.0 cc). In 91 patients RS was the initial treatment, 29 patients were treated after prior embolization and six after prior surgery. 52 patients experienced hemorrhage prior to RS. Median follow-up was 2.2 years (range, 11.3–57.2 months).
