Abstract
Objective To explore the methods, results and characteristics of endovascular treatment of traumatic carotid cavernous fistulas(TCCFs) with covered stents.Method Clinical data of 12 patients with TCCFs treated with endovascular covered stents between January 2006 and January 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. One patient was bilateral TCCFs.13 covered stents were implanted successfully. Results All TCCFs were successfully treated with covered stents. The postoperative angiogram revealed obliteration of all TCCFs,and all internal carotid arteries (ICAs) were fully patent.Follow-up study(ranged from 6 months to 2 years, mean 14.2 months)showed that ICA patency was fully preserved without stenosis or occlusion in all patients.ConclusionsCovered stents endovascular therapy is a convenient, safe and effective method for treatment of TCCF.It should be considered as an alternative method after careful preoperative evaluation of indication and limition.
