Abstract

Background: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis refers to adhesion between the mandibular condyle and the glenoid fossa, maxilla, zygoma or skull base. Such adhesion may be fibrous or bone. TMJ ankylosis is usually associated with trauma, systemic infection or systemic diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Total alloplastic reconstruction of TMJ is an option for patients with important limitations, dysfunctions or pathological changes.
