Abstract

To the Editor. —Congratulations to Drs Gunderson and Tonning for their article on the poor results obtained by using ventilating tubes for the treatment of serous otitis that was published in the April Archives(102:198-199, 1976). It is encouraging to find someone willing to stop playing follow the leader and who dares to report the facts about the bad effects resulting from the use of the highly overrated ventilation tube. I agree with the comments of Drs Gunderson and Tonning, but must take exception to their conclusion that As we do not have better methods of treatment, this therapy seems justified.... I have been using a modified middle ear inflation technique for over 20 years that is completely safe and that will solve over 95% of the problem cases ( Arch Otolaryngol 96:110-112, 1972).
