Abstract
Many prostatic diseases present with similar signs such as haematuria, constipation, dyschezia, hind limb weakness, dysuria and a haemorrhagic urethral discharge, as discussed in the first paper in this series (UK Vet Vol 11 No 3). Systemic signs such as lethargy, pyrexia and weight loss increase the index of suspicion for prostatic infections or neoplasia. An accurate diagnosis is necessary for therapy to be effective and prognostication to be realistic. Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical signs, clinical examination including rectal palpation, radiography, ultrasonography, haematology, urinalysis, ejaculate analysis, prostatic massage culture and cytology. and biopsy. It should be noted that more than one disease can occur in the same prostate gland, for example, prostatic neoplasia with accompanying cyst formation, benign prostatic hyperplasia and secondary infection. This paper covers the treatments currently available for prostatic diseases.
