Abstract

Children with pneumonia, admitted to the pediatric service of the Robert Packer hospital during the winter of 1932, were found, as a rule, with markedly distended abdomens. Inquiry revealed that, previous to admission, they had been upon a diet containing milk. In a certain number of cases, this dietetic factor was continued after admission, and considerable gastro-intestinal symptoms appeared. Marked distention, abdominal pain and vomiting were often difficult to control and were associated with marked respiratory distress and increased respiratory rate.
