Abstract

Petroleum refining unavoidably generates large volumes of oil sludge. The environmentally acceptable disposal of oil sludge is a current challenge to the petroleum industry. Many soil microorganisms possess a remarkable capacity to degrade various components of crude oil. The land treatment of oil sludge — land farming — is an environmentally acceptable and economically feasible disposal method. The development of efficient hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms and their use for cleaning oil sludge in soil are discussed.
