Abstract

Objectives: To study effectiveness of needle aspiration along with injectable antibiotics cephazolin andmetronidazole as a treatment modality in peritonsillar abscess.Place: Department of ENT and H&NS KIMS teaching hospital Kohat (March 2009-APRIL2012)Material and Method: Fifty seven patients were included in study.Age, sex, symptoms and signs recorded.Blood complete picture and blood sugar level done in all cases. Main tool for diagnosis was aspiration of pusfrom abscess with 26 FG needle attached to a 1Occ syringe.All patients were started on inject able antibioticscephazolin and metronidazole except one who was allergic to cephazolin and hence was given inject ablelincomycin.Results: Out of fifty seven patients there were thirty two females and twenty five males, aged 10- 52 years.Two patients were diabetic. Single aspiration was enough in fifty one cases (89.5%), four cases (7%) neededsingle aspiration at two or three sites, while only two cases (3.5%) needed a second aspiration on second day.Mean hospital stay was 3 days. No recurrence was reported till the day of tonsillectomy performed 5-6weeks after peritonsillar abscess.Conclusion: Puncture aspiration along with proper antibiotic selection is safe, effective and easy method totreat peritonsillar abscess with least chances of bleeding and no need for general anesthesiaKey Words: Peritonsillar abscess, needle aspiration, cephazolin and metronidazole
