Abstract

Abstract This case study describes the treatment of a pathologically nonassertive female with Rational Stage Directed Hypnotherapy (RSDH) and behavioral rehearsal. RSDH is a hypnotherapeutic procedure which is an extension and modification of Ellis's RET, and combines cognitive restructuring, hypnosis and imagery. While hypnotizeed and via imagery the client connects various irrational/rational ideas with undesirable/desirable emotions, physiological responses, and behavior. Behavioral rehearsal was added to RSDH to attend to and modify the behavioral components of nonassertion. The entire therapeutic process was outlined and described: behavioral rehearsal, hypnosis, identification of self-defeating processes, cognitive restructuring and direction of the client through growth stages of awareness, exploration, commitment, implementation, internalization and change. Baseline data, 12 weeks of therapy, posttreatment measurements, and a two month follow-up are presented. Criterion measures include objective test results (Tennessee Self-Concept Scale) and self-reported measurements (anxiety, subjective disturbance levels, and approach to people).
