Abstract

AbstractThe surgical treatment of morbid obesity by partitioning the gastric reservoir was designed to reduce caloric intake while avoiding alteration of the normal digestive process. Use of a single row of staples with a TA‐90 apparatus followed by a solid diet provided disappointing weight loss after 12 months, despite early gratifying results. Restricting patients to a liquid diet for 8 weeks postoperatively improved the efficacy of the procedure, but after the superior integrity of a double staple application was proven in the laboratory, that technique has been adopted. Without exception, patients are limited to liquids for 8 weeks postoperatively. Essential to a successful outcome of this procedure is continuing, understanding, skilled support by the nurse and the dietitian, who with the surgeon, comprise the team dedicated to the care of these patients.
