Abstract

In this study, the radiation technology was used for the advanced treatment of effluent of fresh leachate from a municipal solid waste incineration plant which was treated by membrane separation processes. The COD removal percentage of the effluent from the MBR treatment process was investigated by gamma irradiation combined with coagulation process. The experimental results showed that the removal percentage of COD could achieve 45.3% by gamma irradiation alone at the dose of 4 kGy. The COD removal percentage could be improved by the combination of coagulation with gamma irradiation. Particularly, the removal percentage of COD could increase to 55.2% at the dose of 1 kGy, when iron salt was used for the coagulation process. More researches are required in future study for further increasing the removal percentage of COD of leachate, for example, integrating radiation process into biological treatment process to enhance the COD removal.
