Abstract

This study evaluated the efficacy of oral appliances (splints) in the treatment of chronic myofacial pain patients. Fifty-seven patients used full arch maxillary muscle relaxation (MR) appliances day and night, except at meal times. Twenty-eight patients used pivoting appliances together with MR appliances. The period of therapy was about ten weeks. Before treatment, just after the completion of the treatment and at 6th-month recall, patients were asked to asses the level of pain using the VAS (visual analogue scale). A general reduction in pain and improvement in the quality of life was observed. It was concluded that intraoral appliances remain a conservative alternative to irreversible treatments or long-term pharmacotherapy.
