Abstract

IT IS CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED that candidal diaper dermatitis be treated both orally and topically with nystatin. L2 The rationale for combined therapy is to treat cutaneous disease topically and to decrease gastrointestinal colonization that might serve as a reservoir for Candida albicans. 3'4 To date, however, there has been no documentation that oral plus topical nystatin therapy is more effective in clearing candidal diaper dermatitis than is topical treatment alone. A prospective double-blind study was conducted to evaluate the clinical resolution and the incidence of relapse of candidal diaper dermatitis treated with combined oral and topical nystatin therapy compared with topical nystatin alone.
