Abstract

The authors discussed the principal criteria for a correct medical treatment of ascites in liver cirrhosis. A therapeutical approach to ascites, based on a standardized sequential or stepped-care treatment was then considered, together with the available strategies for the management of diuretic resistant ascites. Finally, preliminary data on the efficacy of albumin infusion in ascitic patients undergoing a diuretic treatment were reported.
