Abstract

Patients with acute agitation and schizophrenia require sensitive management by the medical staff. Nonpharmacologic de-escalation techniques are recommended prior to the selection and administration of antipsychotic agents. A variety of medication treatments with different routes of administration are available. Treatment selection for the agitated patient with schizophrenia involves weighing factors including, but not limited to, the medication's efficacy, side effects, and formulation, as well as the patient's medical history.
