Abstract

The rapidly rising prevalence of childhood obesity has been a concern since the 1980s,1,2 particularly among certain ethnic-racial and low-income groups.3,4 This public health crisis was greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.5 the average monthly increase in body mass index (BMI) approximately doubled from March to November 2020 among a geographically diverse cohort of children in the U.S., with the greatest effect observed among those with moderate or severe obesity.5 The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes the important role of primary care providers in screening for obesity and offering tailored interventions.
