Abstract

Decision making in thyroid surgery remains controversial and nonstandardized. In spite of hundreds of articles on treating thyroid tumors, controversy continues to surround such questions as when to operate, how much surgery to do, when to administer postoperative radiation, and how to treat parathyroid glands in unique situations. The consultants we asked to contribute to this article have vast experience in clinical work and have published often in the thyroid literature. We posed several general questions to them, and asked their recommendations concerning a hypothetical case report. We also asked each to present a challenging case report and solicit the recommendations of the others. The resulting dialogue should be helpful to the occasional and the expert thyroid surgeon.
