Abstract
Since its inception in 1948, the NHS has provided treatment free at the point of delivery to all eligible citizens in the UK. In parallel with free healthcare, the specialty of orthopaedic surgery has grown exponentially, both in cost and scope, from a fledgling discipline to one offering surgical expertise on a vast scale.
